A chip smaller than blood cell

On: Friday, October 3, 2008

Imagine a memory chip roughly the size of a white blood cell. Scientists have made it a reality - they have created a miniscule memory chip about one-2000th of an inch on a side. Although the chip is modest in capacity (with 160,000 bits of information), the bits are crammed together so tightly that it is the densest ever made. The scientists, led by James R. Heath of the California Institute of Technology, reported their findings in the journal Nature.

The density of bits on the chip - about 100 billion per sq. cm - is about 40 times that of current memory chips. Improvements to the technique could increase the density by a factor of ‘10,’ said Heath.

The wires used in the chip have about the same width as proteins and that could make possible tiny circuits that could detect cancer or other diseases.

Samsung SWC-E100 ExpressCard (Sprint XOHM)

The Samsung SWC-E100, the first connection card for Sprint's new XOHM WiMAX network, is a simple device that does its job well (as long as you aren't a Mac user). The E100 is an ExpressCard, but it also comes with a PC Card adapter for older computers. At 1.3 ounces and 4.6 by 1.6 by .5 inches, it's moderately sized, and features an LED that shines red if there's a problem, yellow if it detects signal, and green if it's connected. At the end of the card, there's a thick, flip-up antenna. During testing, I found flipping it up was necessary to get the best performance. Unfortunately, the E100 doesn't feature an external antenna port, which would likely be a welcome addition for those in fringe coverage areas.

PS3 PlayTV ships 85,000 units to UK in two weeks

On: Tuesday, September 30, 2008

Freesat's 100,000 sales milestone puts things in perspective

Sony is giving itself a big pat on the back this morning as it celebrates 85,000 PlayTV units sent to retailers over the two weeks since the PS3 Freeview recorder accessory started shipping to retailers.

Although Sony does have a tendency to be a little sneaky when it comes to these kind of figures - units shipped isn't a measure of units sold by any stretch - it shows that retailers are expecting gadget fans to be all over the £70 device this Xmas.

To help put the numbers into perspective, Freesat - the UK's new-ish free-to-air satellite service featuring high definition programming as well as most of the same channels that Freeview offers - is celebrating its own milestone this morning. Freesat has now reached 100,000 unit sales, but it has taken a full five months to get there.

As our T3 review revealed, PlayTV is an excellent add-on for any PS3 console, but if you have a PSP kicking around too, well, it's time to call in favours and start blackmailing Santa to make sure one of these finds its way into your stocking.

And this got us thinking... maybe Sony should be persuaded to give a helping hand by developing a Freesat version of its PS3 tuner accessory. After all, there's a ton of unused Sky dishes out there, ready and willing to be tuned into Freesat, and the added HD would fit in nicely with the PS3's high definition capabilities. The software's already damned near perfect, so we only need the hardware. How's about it, eh?

The HTC Touch HD is Here

Yesterday, HTC rolled out there newest touch model, the Touch HD and it looks like it might give a good competition to existing smart-phones. One of its main features is the 3.8 inch Widescreen VGA display which spans 480 X 800 pixels, which i think is the largest display on a smart-phone, making it ideal for watching movies or surfing the net. So it might even give the experience of a desktop PC.

Other features include a 5 MP camera with auto focus, and like the other Touch series models, it has a TouchFlo 3D interface and is powered by Windows Mobile 6.1. It has a quad band connectivity, 3G which supports European 3G networks, GPS, Bluetooth and WiFi. It is powered by Qualcomm MSM 7201A 528 MHz processor and has 288 MB RAM. Last Month, Samsung wowed the fans at IFA with the launch of X360 notebook which was made to compete with Apple Macbook Air and as compared to Macbook Air, it had a lot of features. Samsung has announced the X460 notebook which looks very similar to the X360 as they both have the same design and aluminium finish. But it has got a 14.1 inch 1280 X 800 screen as compared to 13.3 inch screen of X360.

It is powered by Intel Centrino 2 processor and comes with 4 GB of RAM. It will also give you good graphics as Samsung have also added Geforce 9300M GS chipset with 256 MB dedicated memory. That means you can connect to latest high speed wireless networks from where ever you are. It also has a BlueTooth 2.0 + EDR module allowing you to connect your mobile or wireless speaker. Compared to X360, this one comes with a DVD writer which also supports the Light Scribe technology. Other features include a Fingerprint scanner, 1.3 MP webcam and antibacterial keyboard.

It is heavier than X360 and has a weight of around 1.9 Kg and comes with a 6 cell battery. It would have been better if it would have included a Blu Ray player as well. It will be available in October, no pricing details has been announced.

ASUS is preparing a rival for Omnia with a 5 MP camera

On: Monday, September 29, 2008

It seems that ASUS has some aces in sleeve when it is time to talk about touchscreen terminals and it is not only the P552W model but also a new handset Asus Galaxy7.The Asian company is planning to launch a terminal that will be a rival for Samsung Omnia and that includes a touchscreen (WQVGA or WVGA) plus a 5 MP camera, a trackball for a non-touch navigation and 3G connectivity and WiFi. The list of specifications is ending yet here, but speculations continue till we wait an official announce from the ASUS.
We hope that the new handset will be at least the same competitive as others recently launched Windows Mobile terminals especially in memory capacity and processor performance. If we talk about the interface we hope that ASUS will be a viable alternative that will perfectly suite to Windows Mobile 6.1 OS.

HTC Touch HD vs iPhone 3G vs SonyEricsson XPERIA X1

As you might see, touchscreen phone interface is strongly making its way as the main control scheme in the majority of smartphones and even regular cell phones. While it was used in mobiles prior to iPhone, Apple showed the world that touchscreen interface can be used as an easy and original alternative to regular buttons. Even if you are an anti-Apple fanatic, it is hard to disagree that iPhone, with all its flaws, was a big step forward in user interface - with many other companies now adopting the same control scheme as iPhone's thumb control. The idea of using stylus as a needed part of interaction between user and his gadget becomes more and more outdated nowadays, with devices like iPhone approving that touchscreen can be controlled by only your thumbs, with no stylus at all. Looking as Apple making step after step to dominate the market with its upgraded iPhone 3G, companies like HTC and SonyEricsson decided to renew their device lineup and to produce some interesting iPhone rivals.
And while HTC already made many attempts to compete with iPhone with its Touch lineup, many of them don’t came even close to the iPhone. They lacked iPhone's sleek user interface, its big and bright screen and many more. Now, both HTC and SonyEricsson understood that to make a powerful iPhone rival they must focus on multimedia side of their devices. So, recent products from these companies, HTC Touch HD and SonyEricsson XPERIA X1, were made with all those things in mind. And in this comparison we would like to describe and compare all of those three touchscreen smartphones: iPhone 3G vs. HTC Touch HD vs. SonyEricsson XPERIA X1.

Appearence
Design is a very questionable point of comparison, but at least we can describe the exterior looks of these devices. All three phones were made in black colors, with iPhone you can choose between black and white back panels though. Sizes are almost completely the same, with X1 being the thickest (16.7 mm), iPhone 3G - tallest (115.5 mm) and Touch HD - widest (62.8 mm). HTC Touch HD is heaviest than others (146.4 g).
Complete specifications are:Touch HD - 115 x 62.8 x 12 mm; 146.4 gXPERIA X1 - 110 x 53 x 16.7 mm; 145 giPhone 3G - 115.5 x 62.1 x 12.3 mm; 133 gUnlike iPhone and HTC Touch, XPERIA X1 is a slider, with full QWERTY keyboard hidden under the screen. It is slightly curved when opened, no idea if this is only a design move or somehow improves usability.
iPhone traditionally lacks any navigational buttons, so does the Touch HD. However, SonyEricsson devise has a full set of front buttons, which are shaped in triangles (somehow resembling Nokia Prism) - two soft keys, dial / reject, button for opening Start menu, Ok / close and navigational button in center.Overall, all three smartphones look stylish and interesting, so it is only a matter of taste which one has better design.

Hardware
Competition gets harder when it comes to the hardware side. Let's begin from the part that is the biggest in all of these gadgets - screen. XPERIA has the smallest screen size - it is only 3-inched versus 3.5-inched iPhone screen and 3.8-inched screen of Touch HD. This is probably because XPERIA has many buttons on the front panel which took the useable space from the screen. Both XPERIA and Touch HD share the same WVGA resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, with iPhone in the back - its resolution is only 480 x 320 pixels. However, there is only a small difference in image quality, because of the same display physical size. On the Touch HD and XPERIA small fonts are more readable and picture looks sharper than on the iPhone - but in terms of colors and brightness they are almost completely equal. Needless to say, each phone supports wireless internet over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0, 3G networks and they all has built-in GPS.
Audiophiles will be happy to see that all of competitors have 3.5 minijack connector, so you can connect any type of headphones and listen to your favorite music in full quality. iPhone, just like all Apple products, lacks in FM radio support, which is present in both XPERIA X1 and Touch HD (RDS support included). Unlike XPERIA and Touch HD, iPhone has no ability to expand its memory with memory cards, so it is limited to its factory 8 or 16 GB. Touch HD and XPERIA has no such huge built-in storage capacity, but with microSD and SDHC support it is not a big issue - memory can always be expanded up to 32 GB. Among competitors, Touch HD has the most advanced camera - 5 megapixels with autofocus, XPERIA X1 has 3 megapixel camera, when iPhone's camera has only 2 megapixel resolution.

When it comes to camera, iPhone's abilities are very limited - no video recording, no autofocus, only geotagging - feature, presence of which in XPERIA and Touch HD is still unknown. iPhone also has accelerometer and ambient light sensor - it is uncertain, do Touch HD and XPERIA X1 have those features (taking in consideration HTC Diamond had accelerometer, we consider that Touch HD will have it too, no word about XPERIA). Both XPERIA and Touch HD have 256 MB of RAM, which will be enough for multi-tasking and heavy applications, both have powerful processors - 528 MHz Qualcomm (Dual ARM cores) CPU. iPhone's hardware specs aren't so full, it is known that it is powered by 667 MHz ARM processor which is underclocked to increase battery life. So, iPhone may have more advanced hardware, but if it isn't used, who cares?

Software
Apple recently made a wise choice to allow its smartphone to launch third-party applications and games. However, users are limited with App Store support, so if the application is not in the App Store, there is no way to launch it on your iPhone except for hacking it out. Hacks are already available, being called "jailbreak", and they allow users to run any application they want without Apple's digital signature. This limits the number of apps, but there already is a big amount of them available, from service applications to fun games. XPERIA X1 and Touch HD both run on the Windows Mobile 6.1, which is an open platform and does not have any limitations - so you can easily code an app by yourself and launch it on your device with no worries. There already is a huge amount of WM applications and games, far larger than on the iPhone today.
Although both devices are made on one version of Windows Mobile, their interface is completely different. HTC Touch HD uses TouchFLO 3D interface - made by HTC, it brings all needed functions in one place, and making controlling your device with fingers an easy task. TouchFLO debuted in first Touch model, and now it evolved in a big shell-like application that significantly increases usability of WM. SonyEricsson programmers also wanted to have some unique interface features, so they invented XPERIA - such name belongs to interface smartphone is using. Main feature of it is its ability to use panels, which are like several virtual desktops, and you are able to switch between them in any time you like, in a very interesting and eye-appealing method. It increases productivity, and removing the need in task manager - all those panels are like a different tasks launched and working simultaneously. Big amount of RAM and powerful CPU makes using this interfaces a snap, so in the battle of Touch HD vs. iPhone interface and XPERIA X1 vs. iPhone interface there will be no clear winner.
Although changes made by programmers of both companies are significant, Windows Mobile remained an OS that is not very easily thumb-controlled. Many programs still require stylus, so you can't eliminate the need in this thing, no matter how good your shell is. In contrary, iPhone's version of Mac OS X is made especially for thumbs, so you will never need a stylus to work with this phone. Touch HD and XPERIA X1 come with a standard package of WM apps included, such as Windows Media Player, Internet Explorer and Office Mobile. Office Mobile, although quite limited, offer a possibility to view and edit your documents on the go. iPhone lacks in such activities, however, there is a chance of Office App available in the App Store - for a reasonable price of course. Multimedia capabilities of these devices is almost completely the same, they can play almost any type of media files. iPhone is more limited on this side due to close platform, there are plenty of players for Windows Mobile, with help of which almost every file format can be easily played. Also, Touch HD and XPERIA X1, thanks to their powerful CPUs, can play movies in the full resolution even without need to convert them into their native one - just copy it on the card and watch, so in a battle of these phones vs. iPhone this is a major advantage. However, iPhone has perfect iTunes integration, easily syncs with it and taking advantage of all features it has. Microsoft has made a Windows Media Player sync support for all Windows Mobile devices, but it is made too simple and has a limited abilities opposed to iTunes. In any case, Windows Mobile is more preferred mobile OS if you want a huge application base, open platform and good MS Outlook synchronization. In any other cases, if you are looking for a sharp user interface, complete thumb control and iTunes integration, the choice is simple - its iPhone.
Conclusions
Hard to say at this moment, how successful will these models be, from these three competitors only iPhone 3G already exists on the market. New devices from HTC and SonyEricsson are very interesting and curious, but there are strong suspicions that prices on them will be sky-high. iPhone isn't a cheap phone either, but it can be purchased with a cell phone carrier contract which make this phone times more reasonable in terms of price. In any case, the battle of iPhone vs. XPERIA X1 and iPhone vs. Touch HD will be tough, because they all have some advantages one over another. While iPhone bets on user interface and multi-touch, XPERIA X1 and Touch HD take advantage from Windows Mobile huge application base and open platform. Hard to say, which device is preferable, although Touch HD and XPERIA X1 have in our opinion far better multimedia potential - their huge screen and availability of multimedia applications make them a good choice for a portable multimedia center. Time will tell, how good they will be, so let's just wait until HTC and SonyEricsson finally release their devices to the public, to test them more closely.

Samsung Instinct vs. iPhone 3G: which one will be better?

It's not only the battle of two devices it is the battle of two cell phone services providers: Sprint and AT&T. These two phones will be their best and most powerful presenters that they have. iPhone 3G is not out yet but AT&T was successfully selling the previous versions of iPhone for almost a year now. So some people love AT&T and other love Sprint and it's their choice. What we are going to do is compare the features of the two phones. First of all let's do the comparison of the exterior of Samsung Instinct and iPhone. Instinct is made mainly of plastic which is not that neat today; iPhone has pats made of metal and harden glass to prevent it from scratching. As to AT&T vs. Sprint there are some advantages and disadvantages; but concerning these phones Sprint is giving very high internet speeds and music store from any point of coverage.
AT&T's iPhone can only connect to iTunes store via Wi-Fi, which restricts it to the city limits. Besides, everybody knows about Samsung Instinct's and iPhone's GPS capabilities.I personally liked the voice control on Samsung Instinct; however not sure if it would work as good as they demonstrate it, so train your speech to be able to control it. I'm not sure if it was a good idea to have the keyboard only in landscape mode. My personal opinion is that I want to choose what mode to use because it really frustrates me that I need to turn it every time I want to input some text. One more thing that I love about Instinct is its open platform. I really like to install and use the software I choose. iPhone has made a pretty good job on giving positive experience for the customers but it is closed platform. Another good thing about Instinct is that they give an additional battery and an external battery charger, which can be very helpful during traveling.iPhone should be twice as fast in web browsing as the old iPhone is.
It supports Bluetooth, GPRS, GSM, EDGE, Wi-Fi, HSDPA, UMTS connectivity and that's what they are proud about. One of the biggest news: it will be able to give you 3G video talks with your friends. One other big news is that Apple is going to allow third party applications on their iPhone but only those that are approved by them. Not sure how popular that will be. Apple has done a pretty good job on the user interface. And the question I have is: "Will the third party applications be free or they are going to charge the customers for that?" The platform it is running on is Mac OS X Mobile which should bring the customers best experiences. In the rest of features the iPhone 3G will be just as its predecessor (one of the best phones out there.) It will roll out on July the 11th in 70 countries of the world. The 8GB version will cost $199 and the 16GB version will cost $299.

Nokia 5800 (Tube) finally gets a release date

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic (Tube) model became very popular even before its first official announcement. Not only it is a fine appearence and function-rich model, it is also a first Nokia attempt to enter touchscreen devices market, apart from rather unsuccessful 77x0 models. This time, Nokia tried to move in right direction, aiming this phone to the multimedia side. Let us avoid its comparison with iPhone, because even if they do look similar, Nokia 5800 is a completely different product (we all got sick of those "..." vs. iPhone comparisons. Nokia finally revealed the launch date: this interesting event will be pretty soon, October, 2. Let's look on the details of this phone while we wait for its release.
Nokia 5800 carries XpressMusic label, which seems that it will be targeted to music playing features. XpressMusic is Nokia answer to Sony Ericsson Walkman series; phones that carry XpressMusic logo are specially modified to enhance music playback and control. So, Nokia 5800 has all the music lover should want from a cell phone - big screen for lovely album art visualization and decent video playback (3.2 inches, touchscreen, 640 x 360 resolution, 16 million of colors), big amount of flash memory (150 MB built-in, expendable via microSDHC cards up to 16 GB, 8 GB card included), 3.5 minijack audio port (connect almost every headphones on the market without any special connectors), wireless features to make sharing music a snap (Bluetooth 2.0, Wi-Fi), and other multimedia functions as camera (3.2 megapixels resolution, autofocus, double LED flashlight and video recording in VGA up to 30 FPS) and TV-out. GPS is also present; it becomes a standard for all new premium class smartphones. Another interesting feature of Nokia 5800 is the OS it uses - it will be the first S60 Touch interface, called Symbian S60 Taco 5. Previously, the only touchscreen Symbian was Symbian UIQ, mainly used by Sony Ericsson in their smartphones. However it was based on stylus, so Nokia developed its own interface, aimed at simple thumb control. And last but not least, this phones size is comparable to iPhone, a little bit smaller though - 111 x 52 x 15,5 mm, weight - 109 g.
It is only a couple of days left until release, so very soon this model will hit the market. Price is unknown yet, however it seems that this phone won't be cheap - it is aimed at premium class smartphone market. Maybe it will get the popularity that Nokia N95 gained, who knows?

Shure E500PTH - The Ultimate Sound Isolating Earphones

While these may the most expensive earphones ever, except perhaps for those with gold plating and diamond studs, the Shure E500PTH Sound Isolating Earphones are pretty much the earphones to drool over.

Sound quality is, no argument, the best in the market.
I normally hate ear bud style headphones, but the comfort of these can't be beat. They feel like nothing is there.
And one of the nicest features - push to hear. Most noise-isolating earphones do just that, isolate the outside noise so that all you hear is your music. And then when someone talks to you, or you actually want to hear something outside, you have to pull them off. The Shures have a switch that causes them to reverse the sound isolation, so that you hear what's outside and not what's playing.

They include a carrying case, and the "push-to-hear" switch can be removed for increased portability. You can't go wrong with these, as long as you can afford the steep price.

This is the perfect gift for cooks or gardeners or yourself, no green thumb required. It's a counter-top herb garden, with the perfect balance of organic nutrients, oxygen, lighting and automation technology. No messy soil is needed. It comes complete with everything including seed pods and nutrients.

How often have you struggled with a tweezing job because the light was too dim? Here's a brilliant product (no pun intended) that solves the problem once and for all. Tweezers with a built-in light. They're stainless steel, with a bright long-lasting LED light, and batteries included.

USB Drive made from recycled newspapers

month ago EarthDrive’s eco-friendly usb drive claimed to be the world’s first completely green drive. Well looks like it’s about to get a little competition with this new USB drive. The new drive is made out of recycled newspapers. Yes it is excessively bland looking and if you lay it on a wood desk with similar coloring it will blend in easily with its surroundings making it harder to spot. There’s just not a whole lot about the drive that makes it stand out. Yet, it is made out of recycled materials which will likely draw in the more environmentally conscious.

The drive doesn’t have a lot of perks to it. Stacked against the EarthDrive, the EarthDrive is made from bio-recycled plastics so they are even there. Yet EarthDrive takes it farther and is also a recyclable drive and when you purchase one a portion of the proceeds go to American Forests. In all fairness though, I don’t know many people that would go out of their way to recycle a tiny USB drive. This new drive does come in 16GB, so it does come a bit larger than the EarthDrive. Sadly there is no word on pricing yet, so there is no way to know if this drive is going to cost a fortune or not.

GreenEcoMobility electric vehicle from Chrysler

Everyone wants to do their part in going green these days, and part of the deal is to quit driving around in gas guzzlers - something Americans are guilty of with their muscle cars which pump out way more horsepower than required, just because of bragging rights and wanting to go one up on a neighbor whom they don’t like. Those who are more level headed would think of getting a smaller capacity engine in their vehicle purchase, or even go fully electric if viable. Chrysler could make that happen with their new GreenEcoMobility Peapod electric car, shortened to GEM Peapod.

At first glance, you will find the GEM Peapod to be extremely striking in design, deriving part of its name from the pod-like shape. The whole idea is to reflect its environmentally friendly nature that has always been part of the GEM DNA since it was founded a decade ago. The overall user friendliness of the vehicle comes with today’s technology including iPod integration for you to listen to your favorite tunes no matter where you go, and when used with your iPhone, it doubles up as a hands-free kit - an essential feature since many states these days have outlawed driving while talking on the phone unless you don’t mind the friendly state troopers to issue you a ticket. Additional innovations consist of ergonomic, supportive, mesh seating which enables air circulation for comfort and use of eco-friendly recycled and recyclable materials.

What makes the GEM Peapod extra special is it doesn’t require any fossil fuel to get you from point A to point B, so there is no worry about polluting mother nature here. Regardless of whether you’re headed off for school or for work, the GEM Peapod shows your sincerity in keeping the earth green - hopefully your neighbors will also catch on the idea. The GEM Peapod is being slated for a production run from next year onwards - this ought to be a seller if fuel prices continue their upward trend from now till then. You will be able to choose from half a dozen models - two-, four- and six-passenger cars and three utility vehicles. Don’t think about racing in these though, since GEM neighborhood electric vehicles max out at 25 mph, and have a 30 miles per charge range. Image courtesy of Green Car Congress.

Nokia N96 returns better than ever

When the Nokia N95 was first unveiled to the world just last year, it took everyone by surprise, most notably due to the number of features and functions crammed into a reasonably sized handset. That smartphone has since received a refresh to feature 8GB of internal flash memory to help it keep up with other portable media players and music phones in terms of memory, but then again any device will still age with time, leading Nokia to work on its successor, the Nokia N96. The time is nigh, and the N96 which was first unveiled in front of the public earlier this year at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona will hit retail stores in the UK within a couple of weeks from now. It is rare for a handset to first hit Europe before it makes its way to North America, but then again for a handset as special as the Nokia N96, I suppose allowances can be made for its launch to be the exception rather than the norm.
I know that there will be iPhone fans out there (and maybe even G1 supporters) who won’t bother with the Nokia N96, but remember that Nokia is still the market leader when it comes to total cell phones sold around the world. The Nokia N96’s momentum has been built up over the past months so it would be interesting to see if the Finnish cell phone manufacturer is able to deliver this time round. As usual, we’ll need to take a look at the specifications before we can proceed, so let us see where the Nokia N96 stands compared to its predecessor, the N95.

Quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE: GSM850/900/1800/1900MHz

Dual band UMTS/HSDPA: UMTS 900/2100 N96-1 (RM-247, Global), UMTS 850/1900 N96-3 (RM-247, Global), no UMTS N96 (RM-297, PR China)

3G and WLAN access (RM-297 variant (PR China only) does not have WCDMA, WLAN and DVB-H)

Mobile TV (network-dependent feature)

2.8” TFT display with 16 million colors

GPS Navigation

Access to Ovi

Instant upload to Flickr, Vox, Yahoo! and Google

Full-HTML browser

Symbian OS v9.3 S60 3.2 Edition

16GB internal flash memory

microSD/microSDHC memory card slot (max. 32GB)

2-way slide function

5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics

High quality VGA camera in front of the phone

Double LED flash for the camera

Built-in motion sensor

Auto rotating display
Hmmm, something tells me that 16GB of internal flash memory is meant to help it go up against the high-end iPhone 3G that also has the same capacity, but the N96 wins out since it is able to bump that figure to a whopping 48GB when 32GB microSDHC memory cards are released sometime next year. I am rather disappointed, however, to see that the 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics has been retained, so no change in this aspect from the N95 although the rest of the world has already moved on towards an 8 megapixel camera with Samsung and LG leading the way. Granted, 5 megapixels is still much higher than what Apple offers, but the latter has something Nokia doesn’t - a cult following, sleek design and the software available for the iPhone platform that could eventually see it win out in the long run.

On the other hand, the 16 million color TFT display is a beauty to look at, so don’t go wasting it by having a standard wallpaper that shows off only a single color. Go on, play around with it and use the most colorful photo you have in your collection to do the display justice. The GPS navigation feature also boasts geotagging of images, helping you keep track of where you go as long as you remember to snap photos. Don’t worry, with the amount of memory within, I doubt you’d run out of space anytime soon.

Strangely enough, the camera lens in the N95 has more aperture compared to the N96, but that shouldn’t matter too much to the user since this is not meant to be a dedicated digital camera in the first place. I suppose Nokia also removed the infra-red port since they figured out nobody else will be using this ancient connecting technology much these days, hence justifying their decision. The lack of a hardware 3D graphics accelerator also does not bode well for the N96 where portable gaming is concerned, leaving the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP relatively unchallenged. Nokia has also seen it fit to remove built-in support for VoIP telephony in the N96 unlike Nokia VoIP 2.1 that’s found on the N95.

All in all, the Nokia N96 is somewhat a souped up N95, although there are a few sore points about it as well but those should not detract you from picking up this handset if you’re looking for a capable all-in-one cell phone. It will do well in just about any market released due to its relatively high end specifications, but as to whether it has the staying power to last beyond 2008 remains to be seen what with Sony Ericsson’s C905, LG’s Renoir and Samsung’s Bresson all sporting 8 megapixel cameras. Image shamelessly taken from phones4u, while Wikipedia was gleaned for the system specifications.

Sony MDR-NC500D digital noise cancelling headphones

Business travelers who travel a whole lot will definitely find that a pair of noise canceling headphones can go a long way in helping them maintain their freshness after a particularly long flight, drowning out ambient noise so that they can have a great time snoozing before they touch down at their destination. Sony offers this option in the form of the MDR-NC500D, touted to be the first set of digital noise canceling headphones in the world.

Up until now, all noise canceling headphones have been built on analogue technology but the MDR-NC500D headphones use digital processing and advanced artificial intelligence to more accurately block unwanted noise in different environments. Sony MDR-NC500D headphones virtually eliminate low frequency ambient noise, whether the wearer is listening to music or just seeking some peace and quiet, and they automatically switch between three different noise canceling modes to provide the best results for different environments (aircraft, office, or bus). With large 40mm drivers and with an in-built Digital Noise Canceling Software Engine the headphones also deliver excellent quality sound reproduction.

Good thinking on Sony’s part to include an adapter for connecting the headphones to an aircraft’s entertainment system so that you can enjoy your in-flight movie with greater clarity compared to other passengers. The MDR-NC500D is able to last for up to 16 hours before its AA batteries die out.

Multi-Function Crutch: Polio was never this fun

While I hesitate to make a joke at JFK’s expense (because he happened to have a severely bum leg), Franklin Delano Roosevelt comes to mind as the perfect target for polio jokes. Watch out LOLCats! LOLPolio is comin’ to getcha! Of course, you don’t need polio to have fun with crutches. A broken leg would do just fine.
And injuries have never been as fun or productive as they are these days, with gadgets being released to enhance a typically uncomfortable experience. For example, this Multi-Function Crutch is sort of like the Swiss Army Knife of medical aides. These forearm crutches contain an LED torch, an alarm and red signal lights, we’re guessing to protect from further injuries caused by being struck by a moving (or parked, you klutz) vehicle.

Aside from the go-go-gadget-crutch features, the Multi-Function Crutch is designed to reduce strain on your arms and wrists, and perfect for all ages. While the product description lists the crutch as great for use while climbing, you’d think that once you have a leg injury, it’s time to give up hiking and mountain trekking for a few weeks. Give yourself a chance to lick your wounds.

The Multi-Function Crutch is available from Gadget4All for $31. If you’re just not the type of person who’s going to sit back on their keister and let the world continue pressing on without them, then a set of crutches such as this might help you safely move around the obstacles of everyday life.

Just like the device your doctor uses, the OxiHealth Finger Oximeter provides you with vital information at the touch of your finger. Every time you slip it onto your finger you will receive your pulse rate as well as a measurement of the arterial hemoglobin in your Oxyhemoglobin. There are two sensors that measure the absorption of a red LED light and infrared. The absorption of these wavelengths is different between oxyhemoglobin and the deoxygenated form. The OxiHealth Finger Oximeter gives you this vital information in just seconds.

Tantrum Throwing Alarm Clock gives you a reason to get up in the morning

Sometimes it is difficult to get up in the morning, and if it wasn’t for my infant son, who cries in the morning at 7:00 A.M, I probably would never get out of bed. It appears that Hammer Schlemmer has found a way to create the technological equivalent of a screaming baby in the morning in the form of an alarm clock.

The Tantrum Throwing Alarm Clock will do exactly what its name entails. All you need to do is set it, and it will begin to tap its arms lightly when it goes off. Apparently, it will be sedated when you pat it on the head, which is the closest thing to a snooze button.

If you give it too many snoozes, the alarm will go into a full tantrum where it will flip open its maw like Mr. Mouth, a classic toy from the seventies. Anger isn’t the only emotion that it feels because if you pet the clock, it will apparently smile and even tap its wrists in appreciation.

Not only is this device do alarms, but it can do some fancy dancing if you connect your MP3 player. The Tantrum Alarm Clock runs on 4 AA batteries, and it has a warning light of flashing red lights in his eyes if the batteries are low. You can also plug in an AC cord if you want to for more power.

Top 10 Gadgets

#1. Apple iPhone
The iPhone changed the way we think about mobile media devices should look, feel and perform. The design is exceptional inside and out: It's got a slick glass-and-stainless steel case and an elegant touch screen loaded with eye candy. It's an iPod and a 2-megapixel camera. Images and video clips display vertically or horizontally — they reorient themselves depending on how you hold the thing. When the phone detects a wireless network within range — your own home wi-fi set up or somebody else's — it lets you tap once to connect, and then proceed with your Web surfing, Google mapping, emailing and other activities that can otherwise be painfully slow over AT&T's cellular network — the only one, unfortunately, that carries iPhone calls.

#2. Nikon Coolpix S51c
Have you ever maxed out your digital camera's memory card midway through a vacation? The 8-megapixel Nikon Coolpix S51c point-and-shoot is tricked out with built-in wireless capability, so you can email your images or beam them directly from the camera to your Flickr account or to Nikon's own online photo bank. It's also got a 3x zoom and a roomy 3-in. LCD screen — and it comes in black.

#3. Netgear SPH200W Wi-Fi Skype Phone
This cordless wi-fi phone comes with Skype software already built in, so you can log in to an existing account and start making cheap Internet calls immediately. If you've never used Skype before, do not fear: It takes a few moments to create a new account and you can do it right from the phone's keypad. (The first 10 minutes are free; after that, you'll want to visit Skype.com from your computer to sign up for a service plan with a credit card.) The phone will also work at most public hotspots (including T-Mobile's) so if you have lots of friends overseas, you may not want to leave home without it.

#4. Palm Centro
Do you secretly covet your friend's smart phone while dismissing it as way overpriced? The new Palm Centro provides an opportunity to get all the essential smart-phone features without breaking the bank. This light and bright device supports Web surfing, emailing, instant messaging and text messaging, and sports a 1.3-megapixel camera and a touch screen that works best with a stylus. A mobile version of Google Maps comes preloaded. The qwerty keypad is seriously small, but the bubble-like tactile design of the individual keys makes them easier targets.

#5. Sony Handycam HDR-CX7
The CX7 records rich high-definition footage straight to a flash memory card (Sony's Memory Stick PRO Duo), so it feels light and compact in your palm, and the 2.7-in. LCD screen features touch controls for set up and playback. Should you get the shakes while shooting, the CX7 has the ability to stabilize the image (using optics, which is more effective than a digital correction) and smooth out the action. A built-in HDMI port lets you connect the camera to an HDTV and watch your home movies in all their high-def glory.

#6. Samsung P2
The slim and sexy P2 sounds terrific and plays a variety of music file formats: MP3, WMA and songs from subscription services like Rhapsody and Yahoo Music. The pretty 3-in. screen has touch controls for viewing photos and watching videos, which are displayed at a DVD-quality rate of 30 frames per second. The device also works with BlueTooth headsets and speakers, and soon you will be able to receive forwarded calls from a BlueTooth cell phone. (You'll have to download what's called a firmware upgrade from the Samsung website, but don't worry, it's not as difficult as it sounds.) Comes with 4 GB of memory for $200, or 8 GB for $250.

#7. Toshiba Portégé R500-S5004
This ultra thin-and-light notebook is a dream machine for road warriors. It runs on an Intel Core 2 Duo processor and offers 2 GB of RAM, an integrated DVD burner and graphics card and built-in wireless capability (both wi-fi and Bluetooth). The 12.1-in. widescreen LED-backlit display is super slim and displays in high-definition (1280 x 820 pixels). With the S5004 model you get a solid-state hard drive, which means no fragile spinning parts, so the machine is less likely to suffer damage if dropped or bumped. Total weight: 2.4 lbs.

#8. FlyTech Dragonfly
WowWee's flying insect soars, dive-bombs, hovers and glides using authentic flapping-wing action, which makes it the first commercially available toy ornithopter. It's lightweight (about 1 oz.) yet sturdy, and sports a 16-in. wingspan. The two-channel radio remote lets you control wing speed and tail rotor speed and doubles as a charging base (a 20-min. recharge gives you about 6 min. of flying time). The kids will love it — if you can bear to let them have it for a while.

#9. Iomega eGo Portable Hard Drive
Who knew file storage could be so chic? The 160 GB eGo has enough room to hold up to 640,000 digital photos, 2,900 hours of music or 240 hours of video (depending, of course, on the compression rate). A new dual-interface version works over USB or FireWire and comes with both types of cords. If you accidentally knock the eGo off your desk, the shock-absorbing case will protect the important documents and precious media stored inside.

#10. Belkin N1 Vision Wi-Fi Router
Though the new "N" wi-fi standard, which carries data signals faster and farther than its predecessor "G," isn't expected to be officially ratified until next year, it's far enough along that you can buy certified N products with confidence that they will work with your computers and other hardware. Belkin's audaciously designed N1 Vision router stands vertical and reports on network activity in your house so you can see if your kid is downloading video games when he should be doing his homework. It is designed to configure itself the first time you connect it to your cable modem or DSL, and computers still using older "G" adapters will still be able to connect.
